Bob & Elaine Hazell’s Overlord Talk 2026
Bob was introduced to the Offshore Cruising Club in 1984, and his first trip on Overlord was a passage from Brittany to Southampton Water. He had never had an experience like this before and joined the club. After a number of other passages he obtained his Yacht-Master Offshore Certificate and was passed out as Skipper. Elaine joined the club in 1995, having previously sailed on a sister yacht called Sea Scamp that is 41 ft long.
Sailing Overlord is a very different experience from a normal modern yacht. She is 58 ft long with tiller steering and an offset propeller. She was built in Germany in 1936 as part of a fleet of 200 similar yachts. They did not have engines. The hull is teak on Swedish iron frames and she has been well looked after. She has 10 berths but today a maximum crew of 9 provides more space. She has sailed all over Europe, and one of the biggest advantages is taking a flight to wherever she is, this year Southern Ireland, sail to wherever the next crew change has been arranged, and fly home. It is therefore a great way to experience harbours and countries that you may never have visited.
We will be providing the history of the windfall yachts and then focussing on Overlord and the Offshore Cruising Club. If you are interested, it could be a great opportunity to go for a weekend sail, then decide whether you would like to sail on her again and get involved in the club.
Food will be available on the night, so arrive early if you wish to eat beforehand
and make an evening of it.
