SUMMARY:Stokey Woodall Talk
DESCRIPTION:A Facinating Talk by a True Sailor of the World’s Oceans\nStokey Woodall is a humorous speaker offering a range of interesting and informative talks all liberally laced with anecdotes and humour and presented in his own inimitable style. Stunning visual presentations add an extra dimension. \nThe first part of the talk is called ‘Who the Hell is Stokey Woodall’\nThe first part of this talk will be about the life and times of Stokey\, a working class Black Country man. This is a light hearted and humorous look back at his early sailing experiences and seafaring adventures That took him across the world’s oceans amassing over 300\,000 nautical miles. In 1982 scribbled down on a beer mat in the Peg Legs Bar\, Tortola\, British Virgin Islands he came up with a plan for an ocean sailing school. Talking over a beer about the idea with his friend Tony Sparks\, a celebrated artist in Southampton\, they came up with a logo andname for the Company – International Ocean Services (IOS). Tony believed that Stokey was very similar to the Arctic Tern; a bird that flies in excess of 32\,000 kilometres a year and was a renowned master of navigation. \n  \nThe second part is called ‘Satellites to Frying Pans’\nDuring these times of uncertainty and troubles it is good to be positive. \nThe talk “Satellites To Frying Pans” by round the world sailor Stokey Woodall is a thought provoking one about things that can or do go wrong with your navigation systems and to have a plan B in place for it \nThe Scenario\, GPS goes down\, you don’t have a chart\, compass\, log or timepiece\, the stars cannot be seen because its foggy. \nDon’t worry! Stokey will show you how to navigate with a frying Pan and how to tell the time from the stars plus\, many tips and tricks gained from him having navigated and sailed more than 300\,000 Nautical Miles. \nTo book your place on this very interesting talk please click HERE \n  \nDon’t forget the Restaurant is open so there will be time for a meal before the talk. Make an evening of it.

SUMMARY:Harry Gregory - Harbour Master Talk 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Work of Poole Harbour Commissioners\n\n  \nPHC’s work towards ensuring safe\, efficient\, enjoyable and environmentally friendly navigation\, and how yacht club members can play their part. \nHarry first discovered a love for the sea aged six when\, on holiday in Cornwall with his family\, he took part in a dinghy sailing taster session. \n“It felt like it was in the middle of a storm\, but in hindsight it was probably quite benign\,” he said. \n“A lot of my family got into sailing as a result of that\, and I gradually progressed from dinghies to yachts then\, eventually to ships.” \nAlong with his parents moving there when he was in his teens\, Harry\, who spent time working in project management for the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence\, did much of his training in Poole. \n“I’ve always been attracted to Poole\, and I always hoped to come back here one day.” \nHarry’s new role will see him ensuring the harbour’s Marine Services team and pilots are all operating effectively. \n“In the first instance my aim is to fill Brian’s enormous shoes\, then I’ll work out what might need to be done after that. \n“If I can continue to do what we’re doing at the moment\, while making some small improvements and responding to whatever challenges will inevitably come around the corner next week\, then that’s great.” \nOutside of work Harry spends much of his time with his young family\, but when he gets the chance he has a number of nautical hobbies to keep him busy. \nTo conclude\, Harry said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be here. \n“I’ve had a real connection to Poole for many years and I look forward to meeting the several thousand harbour users that we’ve got and working out whether what we’re doing is up to scratch\, and how we can make the harbour the best it can be!” \nDon’t forget the Restaurant is open so there will be time for a meal before the talk. Make an evening of it. \nBefore you book this or any other event please make sure you are registered\, see here for all Booking System Information\n \n

SUMMARY:Tim Edom's Talk
DESCRIPTION:Tim will be talking about the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and his involvement helping the young people cope by learning the skills of sailing and working together. \nThe Trust is for 8-17 and 18-24 year-olds\, and is free to anyone who has been treated for cancer. Their free four-day sailing adventures can be transformational. But whether you get afloat on the Isle of Wight or in Scotland\, sailing is only the start. \nInspiring brighter futures goes beyond a one-off experience. The Trust’s free Return Trips for under 18s and 18+ years provide the continued support many young people need living through and beyond cancer\, and there’s a chance for siblings of young people who are being or have been treated for cancer to enjoy an adventure of their own. \nAll proceeds from this talk will be donated to Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust \nDon’t forget the Restaurant is open so there will be time for a meal before the talk. Make an evening of it. \nBefore you book this or any other cruise please make sure you are registered\, see here for all Booking System Information \n \n

SUMMARY:West Country Cruise
DESCRIPTION:This cruise is individually booked to suit the participant and therefore has no booked schedule. It has been left to the members that book onto this cruise to sort our there own itinery. You also have the harbour area with lots of galleries\, eateries and interesting places too. In the past we have booked a meal at the Torquay Yacht Club just up the hill from the harbour oposite the Living Coasts Aviary. At the Aviary you can walk around the penguin area looking at the different species. They were happy in their habitats. They are in a very large kind of enclosure where they are free to go wherever they want. A few walk among the visitors. There were other types of birds at this attraction which were free to fly around. There were also otters\, seals\, fish\, sea horses and bugs to look at. Confirmed booked dates: \n \nPlymouth\, berthing in the Queen Anne Battery Marina under Plymouth Hoe\, where there is the Waypoint Bar and Bistro on site with a good menu if you dont fancy wandering off too far on your first evening. The Barbican is only a short walk from the marina with all it’s marvellous shops\, eateries and galleries if you fancy a walk after the sail down from Brixham. The Royal Western Yacht Club is right next door\, and the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club is a short walk across Sutton Harbour Lock\, so you will be really spoilt for places to eat.  The city is within walking distance of the marina\, and there’s the The National Marine Aquarium just outside the marina on the edge of Sutton Harbour. There is also some amazing historical and modern places to visit\, so you won’t be bored with this venue. Confirmed booked dates: \nDartmouth\, This beautiful town of Dartmouth situated on the mouth of the River Dart is one of South Devon’s most popular and enchanting towns. With its charming historic streets\, scenic river location and surrounded by South Devon countryside you have to go a long way to find a town as pretty. \nThings to Do in Dartmouth \nThe beauty of the landscape\, the historical buildings\, and the exceptional local produce all make Dartmouth the perfect holiday destination. \n \nBrixham\,  isn’t just about fishing. It’s still one of the busiest fishing ports in the UK and a working town\, but it’s also a place where you can discover a range of arts and culture\, excellent local food and some unique attractions. Brixham attracts visitors for its character\, charm and combination of tradition and an enthusiasm for contemporary styles.  If you like art\, you’ll love Brixham. The town has a great range of art galleries featuring local and visiting artists. You can visit the artists’ corner on the Strand to see artists working\, if the weather permits. Brixham museum is packed with interesting exhibits from the town’s cultural and maritime heritage. \n \nFalmouth\, Falmouth is famous for its harbour. Together with Carrick Roads\, it forms the third deepest natural harbour in the world\, and the deepest in Western Europe. Located within the South Devon Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty\, Salcombe is known for its outstanding coastal views and rolling surrounding countryside\, as well as a centre for sailing. Salcombe is a great base for holiday spent messing about on the water or at the water’s edge\, or just for a day trip – either way you will fall in love with this beautiful town. \nPlease Note: There will need to be an all boats meeting before members embark on this adventure\, to discuss destinations\, leaving times\, tides and sea conditions.\nAlternative Arrangements: \nWe can adjust the booking for those skippers that may not be able to do the whole trip.
